Newsletter 16 - 11th January 2019

Don't forget - it's the 3G Bake Sale today!

Yesterday we took delivery of our new 'Reverse Vending Machine' for recycling plastic bottles. The machine will accept drinks bottles only (with tops on!) to a maximum of 2 litres.  It does not accept milk bottles.  For each bottle recycled into the machine the school will receive 5p.

The machine comes from Green Redeem and we are part of a pilot project in RBWM.  This means that we will be able to recycle bottles to a maximum value of £2k over a 6 to 12 month period.  Then the project outcomes will be reviewed and we will know whether we will be able to use the machine on an ongoing basis.

Thank you to everyone who has brought in their bottles so far.  Bottles can be brought to the office or taken to classrooms.  Abi and Emily brought in the first bottles of the year and can be seen here scanning some in.

Change to Menu Next Thursday

Next Thursday 17th January, the lunch menu will be Fish and Chips, Vegetable Korma or Jacket Potato.  Friday's menu will be BBQ Chicken Pasta Bake, BBQ Beans and Veggie Pasta or Jacket Potato.  This is because Thursday is School Census Day when the Government collects lots of data from schools - some of which affects our funding.  This includes the amount of money we are given to cover universal free school meals in Key Stage 1.  So the more children who have a school meal next Thursday the more funding we receive.  Hence the switch to the most popular meal of the week!

Year 2 Work with Reading Football Club

This term we are excited to welcome Reading Football Club into school to work with Year 2 as part of their Premier League Primary Stars school programme. Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and Reading Football Club to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.

They will be based in the classroom every Thursday morning assisting with group work, reading and acting as role models. Our designated coach will be Mr Dickinson, who will also deliver an optional Lego club to year 2 during lunchtime. In the afternoon, Mr Dickinson will lead a PE session with the aim of linking the skills we use in the classroom to sports. This will also provide some good development opportunities for our own staff.

If you have any questions about this exciting programme please email Miss Prince or visit https://plprimarystars.com/

KS1 Mini Tennis Competition

On Tuesday Evie, Zach (Y3), Amelie, Alexander and Samuel (Y1) attended a Mini Tennis competition at Charters School with Miss Cullen. They played mini games which taught them important tennis skills such as running, catching and throwing. They represented our school fantastically and came 2nd out of the 4 teams. Well done!

Year 3 Receive a Visit from Ascot Firefighters

At the end of last term, Year 3 wrote thank you letters to one of our emergency services to say thank you for working over Christmas. The children showed great empathy and understanding and worked extremely hard on their letters. So it was a fantastic surprise when members of Ascot Fire Station turned up at school this week to say thank you for their letters. They said the letters had really cheered them up and made them all smile!  They were very touched.  Well done Year 3!
